Finals Night for Father and Son Makh

The line-up for Finals Night in the second edition of the Ultimate Pool Pairs Cup is complete after father and son duo Vic & Vivek Makh dramatically qualified from the fourth and final last 16 group.

The Coventry duo wrote one of Ultimate Pool’s most remarkable and heartwarming stories so far, recovering from losing the opening match of the night 4-2 to arguably the group favourites, Craig Waddingham & Arfan Dad.

After John Roe & Lewis Roberts defeated Darren Appleton & Chris Patient 4-0, the Makhs returned and got on the board with an impressive 4-2 victory over Appleton & Patient. Eliminating their opponents in that match from the competition, the Makhs kept their hopes alive, although even by this point, they were relying on results going their way.

In a crunch fourth match, Roe and Roberts managed to secure a draw with the match clock ticking down as they levelled up at 2-2 against Waddingham & Dad.

That meant going into the final session, there were several permutations possible which involved three teams that could still go through.

The Makhs maintained their side of the bargain, again producing a brilliant display as they saw off Roe & Roberts 4-0 to move top with four points.

That result, though, was favourable for Waddingham & Dad, who now knew a win in their final match would see them qualify, whilst a draw would give them a 6-red shootout.

However, Appleton & Patient – now playing for pride – showed their class with nearly perfect pool to defeat Waddingham & Dad 4-0 and do Vic & Vivek a massive favour by helping them through to the semi-finals.

Next week, the final four teams in the tournament will congregate for the Finals Night. The Makhs will face defending champions Shaun Chipperfield & Karl Sutton, and Shaun Storry & Chris Day will play Gareth Potts & Mark Selby.
