England Win Men’s and Ladies Team Championships

It was a memorable day for English sides in Killarney as they completed a world team title double.

In the WEPF World Men’s Team Championship, defending champions England secured the title for an incredible 21st time with an 11-6 victory over Northern Ireland in final.

England have enjoyed a flawless campaign in the event, winning all ten of their round robin fixtures before an 11-5 victory over Australia in the semi-finals.

The final was a clash between the two outstanding outfits of the tournament, as Northern Ireland – aiming to win the title for the first time – reached the final after coming second in the group and then comfortably dispatching France 11-2 in the last four.

It was the third time at The Gleneagle Hotel over the past few days that the two sides had met. England came out on top in the group phase 14-7, but Northern Ireland ousted them in the semi-finals of the World Team Shootout via a 6-red shootout – an event they went on to win.

Northern Ireland started the final strong going into a 2-0 lead, but England soon flexed their muscles, claiming 11 of the next 15 frames, culminating with Shane Thompson potting the final 8-ball.

Earlier in the day, the WEPF World Ladies Team Championship was regained by England after they ended the reign of South Africa in the final.

England finished top of the round robin and then eliminated Wales 13-6 in the last four to feature in the final having missed out on it the last time the event was held in 2019.

South Africa – winners of that 2019 staging – put up a valiant title defence on the Emerald Isle. After qualifying third from the group, they made back-to-back finals with a 13-8 success over hosts Ireland in the semis.

A tense and tight final ensued, however, from 7-8 down, England put together a title-winning streak in the closing stages with six consecutive frames for a 13-8 triumph.

Elsewhere during yet another exhilarating and hectic day of action, Northern Ireland stopped an English treble by winning the WEPF World Over-60s Team Championship.

Having topped the round robin with five wins from five, Northern Ireland eliminated Scotland 5-2 in the semi-finals and then claimed the Championship with a 5-3 victory over England in the title match.
